The beautiful 65 acres of Chiswick House & Gardens, have been illuminated for the Magical Lantern Festival for the second year running. The immersive trail through the lush gardens, by night is rather magnificent.
The Magical Lantern Festival is a lovely collection of giant lanterns embracing art, heritage and culture, whilst celebrating the Chinese New Year of the Rooster. It’s rather exciting to “Explore The Silk Road,” with the lanterns representing the route of trade and culture from Europe to Ancient China. From London through Europe, Central Asia, Arabia, Egypt, Persia, India and Ancient China there’s over fifty larger than life lantern installations. There’s a sense of tranquillity, walking through the gardens on a crisp night. Traipsing through the mud, is well worth it for the impressive installations.
The English heritage Grade I listed gardens are interspersed with water features, and the reflections onto the water are stunning.
The recreated Forbidden City is by far the most impressive installation.
It can get fairly busy, as crowds are flocking from all over, to get a look in at the west London display.
There’s a sweet aroma of marshmallows being toasted as you get halfway through. And if you find you are able to resist temptation at the marshmallows, the hot churros in the entertainment area, served with Belgian chocolate are just irresistible.
Following the 75 minute self guided trail, there’s a small ice rink, an ice bar and virtual reality experience and fun fair. It makes for a great evening in London, with plenty to eat including crispy duck pancakes and noodles.
The Magical Lantern Festival is open Thursday through Sunday until the 26th February 2017. And if you are looking for something exciting for the kids for half term, it will be open daily during half term. The Magical Lantern festival is great for all ages, for a unique experience in London.
