Venice is one of the most fabulous cities in the world. Maybe we’re a bit biased, with fond memories of the dream marriage proposal there, many years ago. Bobbing up and down on a gondola, on the Grand Canal, whilst passing beneath The Bridge of Sighs. Being serenaded with a singing gondolier, who even shed a tear for the happy moment. It really was the most magical moment, marked with applause from passers by. As cliché as it all sounds, it is such a wonderful memory. One can almost forget how unsteady the gondolas actually are and the hairy moments as they splash through and navigate the sharp corners, and you find yourself tipping on one side. The beauty of Venice through our rose tinted glasses cannot even even be jaded by being violently ill after some dodgy gelato.
There are not many cities which you have to navigate canals and waterways to get around. Walking over little bridges and through small gullies, uncovering beautiful buildings along the way. There are no cars or roads in the city centre and it’s rather refreshing. Hotel Moresco is well located for a stay in Venice. St Marco’s square is about fifteen minutes away and enable many opportunities to marvel over the Grand Canal.
The journey up and down the maze of bridges will see you finding beautiful churches, concert halls and even bumping into a cheeky Charlie Chaplin. All the historic buildings are so impressive.
Piazza San Marco is the bustling heart of city. Full of pigeons and the beautiful St Mark’s square, it’s a great place to start a traditional gondola tour of the canals from.
The Bridge of the Sighs dates back to the 1600’s. It gets its name from Lord Byron, as prisoners would sigh as they took in their final last amazing view of Venice before going to jail. Nowadays it seems to be one the most romantic spots with amongst amorous couples.
The Relais & Chateaux Londra Palace is well located near San Marco’s square for an afternoon tea, with stunning view over the Grand Canal.
Stopping for a stroll at the Bel Air Fine Art gallery is worth a wander. The modern, contemporary unique sculptures by Matteo Lo Greco are showcased. The tribute to the Beatle’s Abbey Road are amongst some of the interesting pieces.
Opposite the gallery is a quaint bakery, with an irresistible dessert counter. The macrons sandwiched together with Nutella are just the perfect combination.
The Rialto bridge is one of the oldest of the four bridges that cross the Grand Canal. Its a beautiful bridge interspersed with small shops that divides San Marco and San Polo. There is always quite a buzz around this area with many canal side cafes.
A trip to Venice is not complete without pizza and pasta on the agenda. It’s one of the few places where we tend just to be lured into the most tempting restaurant when we are hungry.
Venice is really somewhere that you have to visit to believe how beautiful it is. It’s so romantic. It’s the perfect place for a proposal, a wedding, an anniversary or honeymoon. It’s undoubtedly the perfect place for Valentine’s Day.
Happy Valentine’s Day! How will you be spending Valentine’s Day?
